RE Profession – Living and Working for Heitman in Chicago

I’m an originator for the Real Estate Debt Team at Heitman LLC, a global real estate investment manager. As a firm, we invest in public securities, private equity, and real estate debt. I’m responsible for sourcing debt investments for the firm’s discretionary and non-discretionary separate account vehicles.

This debt consists of short-term bridge debt, mezzanine loans, preferred equity, and high leverage construction loans for all real estate asset classes. I’m based in Chicago and I cover the Northeastern US including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington DC.

Daniel K Hayes, MRP ’95, is a Vice President – Real Estate Debt at Heitman, LLC. Prior to joining Heitman, Daniel was Senior Vice President – Investment Management at Hunt Companies. Daniel lives in Chicago, IL with his wife and son.

Managing Live/Work Balance

Thanks to technology, I’m able to manage the balance by having the ability to work from home as necessary. I also travel a great deal but it’s only one to two days at a time. In addition to family time with my great wife and son, I also train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, run, and strength train. This active lifestyle helps me manage work and its stressors better especially since I have the freedom to train during my lunch break.

Focus for Immediate Future

We have raised a significant amount of capital in the past 12 months. With our discretionary bridge debt fund aptly named CREDIT (Core Real Estate Debt Investment Trust) and our non-discretionary separate account clients, we have over $1.5 billion US to invest. I’m focused on assisting our team in deploying this capital by finding new investment opportunities and building new relationships within my assigned territory.
